Radio 4 put out more than 30 comedy commissions, and five weeks later the BBC announced that comedy commissioning for radio is being folded into television.<\/p>\n
Deadline reported on 22 October that BBC chief content officer Kate Phillips will combine the corporation’s TV and audio commissioning teams. The merger covers comedy, arts and classical music from January 2027. For comedy, the concrete change is that Julia McKenzie, Radio 4’s commissioning editor for comedy and entertainment, joins Chris Sussman’s team. The same Deadline report says the BBC will close around 100 roles across its content unit by the end of its current financial year.<\/p>\n Chris Sussman, from January 2027. Phillips appointed him BBC Director of Comedy at the end of August. He reports directly to her and leads the BBC comedy commissioning team. The merger adds Radio 4 comedy to that remit, with McKenzie working inside his team rather than running a parallel audio pipeline. It takes effect from January, so none of these sources describes a different route into Radio 4 comedy before then.<\/p>\n Sussman was due to start in September, with Emma Lawson continuing as Acting Director in the interim. The same round of reporting put the corporation’s target at between 1,800 and 2,000 jobs. The Apollo and Blankety Blank went in late July, months before any of this, so nobody should hang the Apollo on the commissioning merger. British Comedy Guide reported then that the BBC had confirmed the cancellation of two long-running comedy series. It called the Apollo a show that had “given valuable screen time to a legion of upcoming and star comedians alike”. Which is the politest available way of saying it was the one television credit a club headliner could realistically get without a sitcom. <\/p>\n By 22 October more than 2,300 people had signed a petition asking the BBC to reverse the Radio 4 Extra decision. Chortle, covering the petition, was blunt about the sums involved: “At most, the move will save \u00a34million a year”. That figure is Chortle’s: it put the maximum annual saving from closing Radio 4 Extra at \u00a34m a year.<\/p>\n The archive survives on Sounds, which is the corporation’s answer to anyone complaining. It is also an answer that quietly depends on somebody browsing an app to find your 1990s panel show. Comics with back catalogue on the station have the BBC’s word that programmes currently broadcast on Radio 4 Extra will continue to be available through BBC Sounds after the linear service closes. Nobody has told me a Radio 4 Extra closure date, incidentally, and these sources do not confirm one.<\/p>\n Worth being exact, because the panic has already run ahead of the announcement. The BBC has said there will be a comedy commissioning merger from January 2027, around 100 content roles closing by the end of the financial year, and an end to Radio 4 Extra’s linear service. None of these sources mentions a reduction in Radio 4’s comedy output, a cut to its comedy budget, any risk to the September commissions, or McKenzie leaving. She joins Sussman’s team, and the BBC hasn’t said another word about her job.<\/p>\n Here’s the version I’d stand behind. Fewer people in the building will be able to say yes to anything once around 100 roles across the content unit close by the end of the BBC’s current financial year, and from January 2027 comedy is to sit under one director across television and radio, with Chris Sussman overseeing the genre across both, rather than two teams with their own slates to fill. That changes the arithmetic of a pitch that fails upstairs and gets taken down the corridor instead. The promo ladder keeps losing rungs: British Comedy Guide described Live At The Apollo, whose cancellation the BBC confirmed in late July 2026, as a show that had given screen time to both rising and established comedians. <\/p>\n The memo won’t settle it either way. Watch who signs off a Radio 4 comedy pilot in February, and whether the booking for a studio audience night still happens. A Sussman signature plus a booked studio day means this was a seating plan.
