From 2027, Adelaide Fringe is cutting its Inside Charge from 5 per cent to 4 per cent and locking that rate in for four years. Measured against what the 2026 box office actually did, the festival expects that to return more than $250,000 to artists a year. Over four years, that’s more than $1 million.

Artist registrations for 2027 are already open, announced by community broadcaster C44 under the flat headline “2027 Fringe artist registrations open now”. They’re handled through AVR, the festival’s Artist and Venue Registration platform, newly rebuilt with what the announcement calls a fresh new look and improved functionality. The date to get into your phone is 30 October 2026. An event fully registered by then is eligible for inclusion in the printed Official Adelaide Fringe Guide. Print eligibility is the only thing that announcement attaches to 30 October, so treat it as the printers’ deadline it is – registrations themselves don’t slam shut that day. I’d chase the print listing anyway, partly because a paper guide is the one bit of Fringe collateral that survives the walk home.

If you’re weighing up the Australian season from Hackney or Hobart, this is familiar arithmetic. You’ve already done it for Melbourne’s venue deadline and Sydney’s 2027 applications. Adelaide differs on open access, which moves the gatekeeping out of a programmer’s inbox and into your own spreadsheet. Nobody there sends you a rejection email – the February accommodation market handles that part for them.

When is Adelaide Fringe 2027?

The 2027 edition runs 19 February to 21 March, according to the festival’s own key dates page. The run-up goes like this: venue registrations opened first, on 25 August, and artist registrations followed. The printed guide closes on 30 October, and the program launches on 4 December.

For a sense of what you’d be registering into, the 2026 festival brought together 8,044 participants across 1,684 registered events and 562 venues. That program split into 733 South Australian, 585 interstate and 366 international events. That’s three events per venue on average, and the average is doing an enormous amount of heavy lifting there. Nobody who has ever carried a prop bag through a changeover believes a 1,684-event program spreads itself evenly across 562 rooms.

What comes off the top before you see a cent

The headline change is the inside fee, which the Fringe’s ticketing guidance for artists now puts at 4 per cent. The same page makes its own argument for the number, and it’s unusually direct about the rest of the market: “Some ticket platforms have inside fees of almost 15%, but we work hard to keep ours low to ensure higher returns for your box office settlements.” You don’t often see a ticketing explainer throw an elbow.

Then the smaller lines. A flat transaction fee is applied to each purchase across all of the festival’s sales channels, so the charge rides on the purchase rather than the ticket. That’s a decent reason to nag a group of six into buying in one go instead of six times separately. Presenter comps, the papering tickets you hand out to stop a thin Tuesday looking like a rehearsal, incur a fee of their own. The Fringe’s ticketing page carries the current amounts, and the pages I can cite here don’t state what registering an event costs for 2027 at all. Pull that off the festival’s fees page before you build a budget, rather than trusting a number you half-remember from a forum.

The settlement statement is where all of it meets: gross box office income, less the venue’s share, less Fringe fees, less any advertising or services you bought during the season, and the remainder is what gets paid to you. Note the running order. The venue share sits above the Fringe’s cut on that list, and it’s the line you actually negotiate, because the 4 per cent arrives already decided.

Nobody gets paid in March

Settlement statements are issued after the season closes, once all sales are final and any refunds have been processed, and payment follows approximately four weeks after your statement is issued and approved. Your bank details have to be entered and the statement has to be approved before anything moves at all. Count that forward from 21 March and the realistic landing zone for Adelaide money is well into the autumn, which matters a great deal if the venue hire went on a credit card. The card statement will beat the settlement statement by a comfortable margin.

A published clock is the good version of this problem, and Britain supplied the bad version this year. The statement of affairs filed after the failure of Leicester Comedy Festival’s organisers, Big Difference Company, put the total owed to unsecured creditors at £184,510, as Chortle reported from the Companies House filing. Those creditors were primarily comedians and producers who brought shows there. Nothing in Adelaide’s paperwork suggests anything of the sort, and I’m not drawing a line between them. The distinction I’d keep in mind is that “when” and “whether” are separate questions, and the acts on that Leicester list were stuck on the second one. Even among solvent festivals the structures differ wildly, which is why how support acts get paid is worth reading before you commit a February.

A pub, a rooftop, a winery

Venue registrations open before event registrations because somebody has to declare a room before you can book into it. Executive director Jo O’Callaghan was explicit with Australasian Leisure Management about what counts.

It can be a garden, a pub, a hall, a rooftop, a winery or somewhere audiences wouldn’t normally expect.

That’s a licence and a warning in one sentence. Say yes to a winery and you’ve got a venue, plus a room whose curfew, sightlines and bar takings were never designed around a 50-minute comedy hour, and no amount of enthusiasm from the owner changes the acoustics of a tasting shed.

Chief executive Marc Carnes made the open-access pitch plainly when registrations opened, in the C44 announcement: “You do not need to wait for an invitation to take part in Adelaide Fringe. Open-access means artists decide what they present, where they present it and how they build their season.” True, and the second sentence is the expensive one, because deciding where you present it means you’re also the person signing for the room, the posters and the fee you can’t recover if eleven people come.

The gap I keep staring at is at the front end. The printed guide closes on 30 October and the program doesn’t launch until 4 December, so whatever you write about your show in that form is locked more than five weeks before the launch. Write the blurb like it has to survive a stranger reading it at a bus stop in February, and maybe don’t promise a special guest you haven’t booked yet.

Sources

2027 Fringe artist registrations open now – C44

Key Dates – Adelaide Fringe AVR Support Hub

Ticketing Basics – Adelaide Fringe AVR Support Hub

How settlement works – Adelaide Fringe AVR Support Hub

Adelaide Fringe opens venue registrations for 2027 festival – Australasian Leisure Management

Not a penny left in Leicester Comedy Festival to pay creditors – Chortle

Booking a comedy night? Post your gig on Open Comedy for free and comedians near you can apply with video clips.
