Josephine Lacey plays Autism Mama for the last time on 20 September at the Top Secret Comedy Club in London. She is paying for the cameras herself<\/a>. Chortle reported the recording on 10 September, along with her reason. She is self-financing it because “now feels like the right time to make my show accessible to everyone.” The show began at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2024 and ran at Soho Theatre. It toured venues across the UK and Ireland, and has been performed for care and support groups. Two years of touring, one last night, and an invoice for the shoot that nobody else is picking up.<\/p>\n

A few years ago a comic in that position waited to be asked. Now the default plan for a finished hour is to film it yourself, or get a venue to film it, and then stick it somewhere people can watch without paying. It shows up across enough separate acts, and enough separate platforms this year, that it has stopped being one comic’s quirk.<\/p>\n

Three hours went up in the same week in April<\/h2>\n

Chortle’s weekly listings column on 26 April 2026 grouped them under a single heading, which tells you something about how routine this has become. The line reads: “Released for free on YouTube in the last week were Miles Jupp’s On I Bang … Ed Night’s Hour Long Clip, and Kiri Pritchard-McLean’s Home Truths.” Jupp’s is about suffering a brain seizure. Three full-length British comedy specials, out inside seven days. Filed in a round-up between a Radio 4 panel game and Have I Got News For You.<\/p>\n

The same column flagged Jack Tucker: Comedy Standup Hour going up at 8pm that Sunday. Jack Tucker is the alter-ego of the US comic Zach Zucker, and the hour was recorded at Bell House in Brooklyn. Two weeks later, Stamptown taped its debut special at the Netflix Is A Joke Festival in Los Angeles, on 8 and 9 May. So the American end of the same behaviour, except with a streamer’s festival banner over the follow-up. The practical side of all this is less glamorous. The camera op turns up and the room’s lighting rig is two par cans and a fire exit sign.<\/p>\n

Where can you watch UK comedy specials for free?<\/h2>\n

Mostly on YouTube, either on the comic’s own channel or on Soho Theatre’s. That channel has been moving its back catalogue of hours out from behind a paywall. Soho’s own announcement of the change named six of them: Olga Koch’s Homecoming, Anuvab Pal’s The Empire, Felicity Ward’s Busting a Nut, Jen Brister’s Meaningless, Jordan Brookes’ I’ve Got Nothing and Josie Long’s Cara Josephine. More than 20 further comedy specials were promised to follow.<\/p>\n

Before the paywall came down, those hours had been doing the rounds elsewhere. Soho says they had been available through Amazon Prime Video UK and Soho Theatre on Demand, with 30-minute versions on British Airways in-flight entertainment. There is something quite bleak about an Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning hour being cut in half for people at 38,000 feet who mainly want the seatbelt sign to go off. The theatre put its channel at 93 million views and 154,000 subscribers in that announcement. By 13 January 2026 the figure had moved to more than 93 million views and 160,000 subscribers. That was when Chortle wrote up Catherine Bohart’s Edinburgh Comedy Award-nominated Again, With Feelings going “free worldwide from Friday” on the same channel.<\/p>\n

Eighty quid a year, or nothing at all<\/h2>\n

The paid shelf has not gone away, and it is pitching hard. NextUp, the UK stand-up service, currently lists a yearly membership at \u00a380.00 on its join page. Its page aimed at acts makes the case in one line that reads like it was written specifically against the free-on-YouTube habit: “Earn additional revenue (more than YouTube) for minimal additional effort”. It also promises to “Get your show on Amazon Prime Video, ITV-X, UKTV, Audible + more”. The argument there is that a special is worth more inside a distribution machine than sitting on a channel with your tour dates in the description.<\/p>\n

Then in April, Chortle reported that Nashville-based 800 Pound Gorilla Media was launching Gorilla Comedy+ on 5 May with more than 250 stand-up specials. The price is $9.99 per month (\u00a37.40) or $99.99 (\u00a374) annually in the US, with British pricing still to be confirmed. The British names at launch were Sarah Millican, Bill Bailey, Sara Pascoe and Kerry Godliman, alongside Rhys Darby, David Cross, Patton Oswalt and the Australian comic Celia Pacquola. The first new exclusive was Nish Kumar’s Nish, Don’t Kill My Vibe, with originals from Pete Holmes and Matt Rife to follow. The company says it already reaches around 20 million comedy fans a month across its existing platforms. Its co-founder Damion Greiman told Chortle:<\/p>\n

Whether the comedy world wants another place to come together at $9.99 a month is a separate question, and one that the same acts’ free uploads are quietly answering. NextUp put 16 Fringe shows online for \u00a350 this August, which is a lot of stand-up per pound and still competing against a category where the price is zero.<\/p>\n

Kiri Pritchard-McLean has hers on three different shelves<\/h2>\n

Her own website is the clearest map of how a working comic is handling this. It lists Hysterical Woman and Home Truths on NextUp, and Victim, Complex and Empathy Pains on Gumroad, the direct-sales platform where the comic keeps the customer and the mailing list. Home Truths is also the hour Chortle logged going free on YouTube in April. One act, one back catalogue, three distribution routes with three different economics, and no obvious rule about which hour ends up where.<\/p>\n

None of that is disorganisation. There is no standard deal to sign, so every hour gets placed on its own merits and the placing is done by the act. A comic with four recorded hours is now running a small distribution business alongside the touring, and the admin does not come with a producer attached. Somebody still has to answer the email about the subtitles file.<\/p>\n

Nobody sends a cheque for the camera op<\/h2>\n

None of the stories above says what any of these shoots cost, and I am not going to invent a figure. What is on the record is that Lacey is paying for hers, and that the commissioning end has been shrinking around her. The BBC axed Live at the Apollo with a series still to tape. The gap is being filled by things like Have A Word’s eight Apollo-style tapings, rather than by a broadcaster ordering more hours<\/a>. Set that against the earnings picture<\/a>, where UK comedians reported \u00a321,143 in 2025, and self-funding a multi-camera shoot is a real decision with a real number behind it, even when nobody publishes the number.<\/p>\n

The upside is control and a permanent asset, since a commissioned special belongs to whoever commissioned it and disappears when the rights window shuts. The camera op does not care that the hour is about autism and puberty, only whether there is a socket near the back wall. Lacey’s own framing is unusually clear-eyed: “Autism and puberty will forever be around, which means my show doesn’t have a shelf life.”<\/p>\n

Bohart tours in the autumn with her last hour already out<\/h2>\n

Bohart tours the UK and Ireland in autumn 2026 with a new show, Borrowing Trouble. The award-nominated hour before it is free to anyone with a phone, which makes the special the advert and the ticket the thing you actually sell. That works nicely while free hours are still slightly unusual, which they are not going to be for much longer at this rate.<\/p>\n

The strain shows up on the paid side first. A subscription service selling access to Sarah Millican or Kerry Godliman is selling something an audience can partly get elsewhere for nothing. NextUp’s “more than YouTube” line is an argument that only holds while there is a meaningful gap. The other strain is on the acts. Three UK comedy specials landing in one week in April looked like abundance; from the comic’s side it looks like everyone racing to be the free thing people watch on a Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
