The listing promises “Over 300 acts compete for the title of New Comedian of the Year and a \u00a31,000 prize”. The first of those acts went up at 7pm on Thursday 10 September, in a Grade I listed church crypt on Bloomsbury Way. There’s a bar at the back of it. Five minutes each, and the door on entries has already shut. The competition page now carries the line “2026 Applications are now closed!” So the field’s fixed, and the only thing still open to argument is the calendar. The venue has published every date except the one everybody actually wants.<\/p>\n
I counted the dates on the page rather than taking anyone’s word for the shape of the thing. The heats run Thursday 10 September to Sunday 11 October, mostly Fridays at 7pm and weekend doubles at 4pm and 7pm. They come to twenty-five shows. Quarter-finals take up ten more between 1 and 15 November. Semi-finals are four: Thursday 26 and Friday 27 November at 7pm, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 at 4pm. The final is listed as TBC, which we’ll come back to.<\/p>\n
Three hundred-odd acts across twenty-five heats is twelve a night, give or take. Twelve fives is an hour of stand-up before you’ve added a compere or a break, about the ceiling for a crypt on a Sunday afternoon. The venue didn’t publish that sum – I worked it off the dates. What the venue hasn’t published is how many go through from each heat. That’s the question every entrant will be putting to their heat’s MC in the corridor. Twenty-five heats feeding ten quarter-finals tells you the cull is steep without telling you how steep. I’m not going to invent a number to fill the gap. There’s no entry fee or heat ticket price on the page either, and I couldn’t confirm one anywhere else.<\/p>\n
Eligibility is plain enough: the competition is “open to any non-professional act who’s been performing for 5 years or less”. Character acts, musical acts and sketch groups are all welcome. Non-professional is doing a lot of work there. Given how thin the paid work is spread right now<\/a>, plenty of acts four and five years in have never earned enough off a gig to disqualify themselves from anything.<\/p>\n December, in the Main House at Leicester Square Theatre – and that’s as precise as the organisers have gone. The page says “Heats take place throughout the Autumn season at the Museum of Comedy, culminating in the final in the Main House at Leicester Square Theatre in December.” Yet the final itself is listed as TBC, alongside rounds that all have times against them. Wikipedia gives the theatre a capacity of 400 seats. So a finalist goes from a crypt with a bar at the back of it to a 400-seat West End room in about twelve weeks, which is a longer walk than it sounds – the laughs come back at you later in a big room, and acts who aren’t used to it start waiting for them.<\/p>\n Worth knowing if you’re pencilling out December: the last edition didn’t land in December at all. Bruce Dessau’s write-up at Beyond The Joke put the 2025 final on Saturday 10 January at 3pm in the Main House. Fourteen finalists, Sam Nicoresti compering, and the previous year’s winner Rohan Sharma headlining. I’d treat the December line as what they’re aiming at and hold off booking anything around it. A 3pm Saturday final is a very specific ask of an act’s friends and family, most of whom will have booked a train.<\/p>\n The Museum of Comedy sits in the Undercroft of St George’s Church, Bloomsbury Way. Leicester Square Theatre director Martin Witts founded it on April Fool’s Day in 2014. Witts also owns and manages the theatre the final’s held in. That makes this a competition run end to end by one man, across two of his own rooms – which isn’t a scandal, because most new-act competitions are somebody’s venue looking for next year’s bill, but it’s worth saying out loud, since it’s why the heats can run twenty-five nights deep without anybody having to hire a room. (Don’t drive to either. Parking on Bloomsbury Way is a fantasy, and the other one is in Leicester Square.)<\/p>\n Witts told the Museums Association in 2020 how close the whole operation came to not existing:<\/p>\n It took us three years to get a licence to serve beer. We got rejected twice; some former residents complained that we shouldn’t serve alcohol on the church grounds in the presence of children. But if we didn’t have the bar, the museum wouldn’t have survived.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n He also described taking the space on: “When I took over nearly 10 years ago, it was just an empty crypt with 50 priests working down here. I wanted a church property, as I knew I wouldn’t have to deal with developers.” Three hundred comics are now doing their competition set in a room that exists because a licensing committee eventually said yes on the third go.<\/p>\n How long is the New Comedian of the Year set? Five minutes. The page is blunt about it: “all contestants must stick to 5 minutes of material or risk disqualification”. A hard light at five changes what you can put in it – no long callback, no second pass at an opener that didn’t take, and no getting carried away with the crowd work<\/a> because the bloke in the second row turned out to be funnier than the bit you’d written. A tight five that survives a light is a different piece of writing from a tight five that gets a laugh. Comics who only ever work rooms where the MC lets the good ones run tend to find that out on the night.<\/p>\n The prize is \u00a31,000, and the alumni list is the bit that actually gets people to enter. The page names “previous winners and finalists include Rob Beckett, Rachel Parris, Sofie Hagen, Tim Renkow, Jess Fostekew, Nigel Ng, Rosie Holt, Alasdair Beckett-King, Tez Ilyas, Viggo Venn and loads more”. A thousand pounds is the same cash figure the BBC New Comedy Awards<\/a> put on their winner this year. It’s also a thousand more than several competitions I could name hand over. It sits somewhere in the middle of an autumn calendar that also includes So You Think You’re Funny. An act doing all of them does the same five minutes from September to January, for a total prize pot they’d earn in a fortnight of paid weekends.<\/p>\n One last thing about the walk to the stage. The museum’s collection, according to its own about page, includes “Bill Bailey’s legendary six-neck guitar, the back door of the Trotters’ iconic Only Fools and Horses Reliant Regal, original Spitting Image puppets, and even Little Tich’s shoes.” If you’re in a heat between now and 11 October, you will do the most important five minutes of your year so far having just walked past a car door from Peckham.<\/p>\n <\/p>\nWhen is the New Comedian of the Year 2026 final?<\/h2>\n
