“It’s the last Friday of the Fringe and people are sitting with half-full rooms,” Susie McCabe posted in the closing days of August. By the time she wrote it, the Fringe Society had figures pointing the other way. The 2026 festival issued 2,805,395 tickets, an eight per cent rise. More than 164,000 went out on the second Saturday alone, the biggest single day the Fringe has ever had, which is also the Saturday the Royal Mile turns into one long queue for a free show about grief. Both of those things are true at once. The row that has broken out since is about whether the Fringe dates are what’s causing the gap.<\/p>\n

Assembly Festival moved first. In its end-of-run statement the venue formally proposed that the 2027 festival start a week earlier than currently planned. Companies and artists “have consistently raised the current schedule as a pressure point, particularly in this last week,” it argued. Assembly “believes an earlier start would ease that pressure without diminishing the festival.” Scottish schools went back roughly nineteen days before the final Fringe date this year. Acts on a full run spent their last week playing to a city where the school run had already started again.<\/p>\n

When is the Edinburgh Fringe 2027?<\/h2>\n

The 2027 Edinburgh Festival Fringe is currently scheduled for 6 to 30 August, one day earlier than the 2026 run of 7 to 31 August. One day, which you could lose waiting for someone on the Royal Mile to hand your flyer back to you. Assembly wants that pulled forward by a further week, and so far nothing has moved. Fringe Society chief executive Tony Lankester was asked directly whether the Fringe dates would move for 2027, and said no.<\/p>\n

His reasoning, given to PA, is that the calendar cuts both ways. “We take Susie’s point but there are two sides to that argument,” he said. “I’ve spoken to people who love it when the school holidays end because that’s built-in childcare which frees them up to go and see some shows.” On the specific complaint about the final week he conceded the point and then swallowed it whole. “Yes, the last week has absolutely been quieter but off-setting that, the first week was significantly more busy.” Counted across the whole festival, that holds up. An act with a three-week run pays the same rent for week three as it did for week one, whatever the citywide total says.<\/p>\n

McCabe’s complaint was marketing spend, and she put it in writing:<\/p>\n

The data in every venue told every one of us that this year the last week was about to fall off a cliff. And yet no mainstream or national advertising was implemented. The Fringe Society have let us all down.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That’s McCabe, a Scottish comic who played Assembly George Square this year, as quoted in PA’s wrap of the festival<\/a>. She also told Chortle that “Starting at the tail end of the first week in August is absolutely ludicrous.”<\/p>\n

The number in the middle of all this is 45.7<\/h2>\n

Here is the figure that didn’t make it into anybody’s press release. Theatre blogger Chris Neville-Smith ran the Fringe Society’s own numbers on the final day and worked out tickets per performance. It came to “45.7 for 2026, down from 48.3 last year. I make that a 5.2% drop.” The festival added 339 shows, which is where the extra sales came from, while the average room took fewer people through the door than last year. “There were 4,232 shows in 2026, versus 3,893 in 2025,” he wrote. Tickets came in at 2,805,395 against 2,604,404, which works out at 7.7 per cent rather than the headline eight.<\/p>\n

So the pie grew by about 7.7 per cent and the number of people cutting it grew by 8.7 per cent. Neville-Smith is unconvinced the Fringe dates explain any of it. “I’m sceptical you can blame bad sales of individual shows on the timing of the fringe,” he wrote. He’d already flagged the last week as a problem back on 25 August. “One show that I was convinced would be a best-seller throughout the fringe cancelled half of its week 3 performances,” he noted. He’d had that one down as a sell-out, and it wasn’t some first-timer doing 11am in a basement with a laminated sign on the door. We counted 1,401 comedy shows in the 2026 programme<\/a> back in early August. Divide 2.8 million by 4,232 and the arithmetic gets uncomfortable long before you start blaming the calendar.<\/p>\n

Moving the Fringe dates might still be worth doing, but an earlier start shifts the squeeze onto a different week. Whoever draws week three in 2027 finds out which one.<\/p>\n

The official digs already checked out on the 30th<\/h2>\n

The clearest evidence that the last week gets treated as expendable is in the accommodation booking. The Fringe Society’s own artist housing at Queen Margaret University in Musselburgh ran 2 to 30 August this year. The festival ran 7 to 31 August, so the official digs closed the day before the festival finished<\/a>. A five-bedroom flat there went for \u00a31,750 a week, a six-bedroom for \u00a31,890. Anyone with a show on the 31st had to find their own bed for the last night, after three weeks of paying that rent to get there.<\/p>\n

That mismatch happened because the Fringe moved later and the housing didn’t follow. Nobody in Musselburgh was being spiteful about it; a booking window got set at some point and the last night of the festival fell outside it. For context on what an act can expect in support, only 16 of 402 applicants got a \u00a32,500 Keep it Fringe grant<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n

Burdett-Coutts has been doing this for 47 years<\/h2>\n

The date change is the headline, but it’s the fourth item on Assembly’s list in spirit if not in order. Alongside it the venue wants an independent financial review covering accommodation costs, venue expenses and Fringe Society spending. It also wants a formal contract between the Society and the venues, setting out who owes whom what. William Burdett-Coutts, Assembly’s chief executive and artistic director, put it bluntly to Theatre Weekly. “I have spent 47 years working at the Fringe and the current fractured relationship between the core venues and the Fringe Society must be brought to a close.”<\/p>\n

He’s negotiating from a decent position. Assembly issued over 500,000 tickets for the first time since the pandemic, across 5,394 performances of more than 260 shows. Average attendance was 56 per cent. It did all that from seven hubs across the city, after relocating out of Princes Street following the fire that moved 17 shows to St Andrew Square<\/a>. Seven hubs is seven sets of get-in instructions, which is seven chances for a tech to be sent to the wrong door. Of those 5,394 performances, 625 sold out, a bit under one in eight. The Pleasance issued more than 484,100 tickets over its 42nd Fringe, won 25 awards and says it put over \u00a3100,000 directly into artist support. Gilded Balloon sold more than 215,000 across 224 shows.<\/p>\n

Those three venues between them account for a serious chunk of the paying audience, and the big-four venues have been where the prizes land. All six of this year’s Edinburgh Comedy Award best show nominees played Monkey Barrel or Pleasance<\/a>. When they ask for a financial review and a contract, that isn’t a suggestion box. Pleasance director Anthony Alderson stuck to the warmer register in his own statement. “Curiosity is at the heart of the Fringe; artists taking risks, audiences taking a chance on something they know nothing about and all of us being open to the possibility of discovering something extraordinary.”<\/p>\n

Assembly wants public bodies to fund the review before 2027, which is the Fringe’s 80th anniversary and therefore the year everybody will be watching. Whether the Fringe dates shift is the Fringe Society’s call and Lankester has already given his answer. What nobody has costed yet is the version where the dates move and the last week gets a bit busier. Then 4,500 shows turn up to split it, and somebody at Queen Margaret University gets asked whether the flats can stay open one more night.<\/p>\n
