Chris Cantrill’s Rewilding goes on at 12:10 in the afternoon at Monkey Barrel Comedy’s Tron room, which is neither the hour nor the postcode anyone romanticises when they talk about a career-making Fringe run. It got nominated anyway. What I couldn’t stop staring at, once I’d pulled the venue listings for all six of Wednesday’s best show nominees, was that every one of them is playing a room run by one of two operators: Cantrill, Dan Tiernan, Harriet Dyer and Lara Ricote at Monkey Barrel, Li Jin Hao at Pleasance Courtyard, Spencer Jones at Pleasance Dome at 8.15pm with most tickets at \u00a318.<\/p>\n
That’s not a knock on either operator. Monkey Barrel is an independent club that runs comedy fifty-two weeks a year and has earned every bit of its programming reputation, and the Pleasance has been finding people for decades. But when a shortlist of six comes out of two buildings’ worth of programming decisions, the panel isn’t discovering the Fringe so much as ratifying what two very good bookers already decided in February. My position, and I’ll defend it for the rest of this piece: the rival ISH shortlist, announced the same day, is now the more useful document about what actually happened in Edinburgh this August.<\/p>\n

Money and dates, since those are the two things people actually search for. Chortle reports that the winner of the best comedy show receives \u00a310,000, with the best newcomer and panel prize winners receiving \u00a35,000, the arrangement that arrived when Audible took over the headline sponsorship<\/a>. Winners are announced at a ceremony hosted by Richard Gadd and 2025 best newcomer Ayoade Bamgboye on Saturday; Beyond The Joke puts that at Saturday 29 August 2026 at Ghillie Dhu. The gala goes out on BBC Radio 4 at 11pm the same night, so if you’re not on the guest list you can find out in bed like everyone else.<\/p>\n Now the same exercise on the ISH Edinburgh Comedy Awards shortlist, published on 26 August as well. Ten shows for best show, and Chortle prints the venue and time next to each: Dan Tiernan, Eric Rushton, Harriet Dyer and Lara Ricote at Monkey Barrel, Paul Foot at Underbelly, Reuben Kaye at Assembly George Square Gardens, Tom Short at Hoots @ Nicolson Square, Brennan Reece at PBH @ Liquid Rooms, Paul Currie at Free Festival @ Counting House at 20:30, and The Last Funny Woman, which is Kate Cheka, at PBH Free Fringe @ Voodoo Rooms at 17:55.<\/p>\n Six operators instead of two, and three of the ten are free-entry shows. Paul Currie doing Remove Your Skin Please in the Counting House at half eight is exactly the sort of booking that never turns up on a shortlist assembled from press invitations, partly because the Counting House ballroom’s sound has historically been at the mercy of whatever is happening in the bar downstairs. The overlap is the bit that settles the argument for me, though. Tiernan, Dyer and Ricote are on both best show lists. Marty Gleeson’s Dog Ear is on both newcomer lists. So the ISH panel isn’t operating on some eccentric parallel taste that ignores the shows the industry rates; it agreed with the industry on three of six and then found seven more.<\/p>\n Chortle lists the Edinburgh Comedy Award panel as ten people: Liz Lewin, director of comedy series at Netflix UK; Sasha Bobak, comedy and entertainment producer at BBC Studios; Sam Bryant, director of original content and head of comedy at Audible; Tristram Fane Saunders of the Telegraph; Dominic Maxwell of the Times and Sunday Times; Anya Ryan, who writes for the Guardian, the Times, Time Out and the Stage; Darren Smith, creative director at DLT Entertainment; and three public panellists, Amar Chauhan, Isabelle Jackson and Louise Robb. We wrote in July about a Netflix executive taking the chair<\/a>, and here is what that looks like in practice: four of the ten hold commissioning or content jobs at companies that buy comedy.<\/p>\n Lewin, quoted by Beyond The Joke, made the case for the list herself:<\/p>\n What struck all of us on the panel this year is the range this shortlist covers \u2026 yet every one of them made a room fall about laughing in a way only they could. Ten of us argued, laughed, and agreed\u2026 eventually!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n I believe the arguing. Ten people watching what ten people can physically watch in three weeks while filing copy or holding down a day job is a real constraint, and nobody on that panel chose it. The ISH awards handle the same problem by throwing bodies at it: around thirty panel members, all volunteers, with the stated aim of getting round every eligible show, eligibility being full-length comedies that open before 21 August and run until 28 August, comedy as the primary brochure category, no compilation shows. Their longlist ran to 60 acts, 39 for best show and 21 for best newcomer. Founder Nathan Cassidy, quoted by Beyond The Joke, describes the method without much ceremony.<\/p>\n The ISH Awards are just a group of people going out, seeing as much as they possibly can and getting excited when they find something they think is exceptional.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Here’s the steelman, and it’s a good one. The Edinburgh Comedy Award pays more: \u00a310,000 for the winner against ISH’s \u00a35,000, and \u00a320,000 across its three named prizes against ISH’s \u00a316,000.01 across five. It goes out on Radio 4. Richard Gadd is hosting it, which is itself the argument, because a former winner presenting the thing is a live demonstration that the nomination moves careers rather than just bank balances. Agents answer emails about it. A best newcomer nomination has historically been worth a tour, a commission meeting and a run at Soho Theatre, and none of that attaches to a shortlist announced on a volunteer-run website.<\/p>\n All true, and it still doesn’t make the shortlist a better map. The Eddie’s value is a career signal, and a career signal is generated by the panel’s authority rather than by its coverage, which means it can be perfectly reliable while looking at a fraction of the festival. The ISH prize breakdown is the tell in the other direction: \u00a35,000 best show, \u00a34,000 best newcomer, \u00a35,000 panel prize, \u00a31,000 best tech and \u00a31,000.01 for joke of the Fringe<\/a>, with the sponsorship coming from working comics rather than platforms. Romesh Ranganathan is behind best show, Sarah Millican behind newcomer<\/a>, James Corden and Rhod Gilbert behind the panel prize, Mark Silcox behind the joke. Garry Starr then put in \u00a31,600 so that every nominee gets \u00a3100<\/a>, which at Fringe accommodation rates is about a night and a half of a shared flat in Marchmont.<\/p>\n ISH has a Charlie Award for tech, split into best technical designer and best technical operator, decided by public vote, with \u00a31,000 attached. I’ve sat in enough get-ins at 9am to have views about this. The person running lights and sound for six shows a day in a converted lecture theatre is the single most load-bearing employee of the Edinburgh Fringe, and the idea that they might get a grand and a public vote out of August is a better piece of festival design than anything on the Radio 4 running order.<\/p>\n The panel prize shortlist points the same way. It names Henry Churney of Laugh For Life Comedy, Jess Brough of the Fringe of Colour Database, Sarah-Louise Young for her solo artist meet-ups, Lee Kyle and Felt Nowt for running The Garrett and bringing 51 regional comedians up, and the Live Comedy Association, which represents 1,600 industry professionals and distributed \u00a35,000 raised by crowdfunding. That is a list of people who solved logistical problems for other acts, which is a category the Edinburgh Comedy Award structurally cannot see, because its panel is built to identify shows rather than infrastructure.<\/p>\n So: read both lists on Saturday, and treat the six-name Edinburgh Comedy Award shortlist as an accurate readout of what two venue operators programmed and ten busy people got to, and the ISH ten as the closer thing to a census. If the Eddie panel wants that back, the fix isn’t a bigger prize or a better sponsor, it’s more bums on more seats in rooms where the ticket is free and the get-in is a plug socket behind the bar. Cantrill’s noon slot at the Tron proves they’ll go somewhere unfashionable when the show is good enough.
