The tech op gets \u00a31,000. An actual cash prize, in a category called best tech. It’s handed over at a ceremony that starts at half past eleven at night in the Counting House. Scroll the Fringe Society’s own list of comedy awards, from the Malcolm Hardees to the Comedy Poster Awards. Nobody else on it puts money in the hand of the person running the lights and sound.<\/p>\n
That \u00a31,000 is one slice of a total the ISH Edinburgh Comedy Awards confirmed last week: a record \u00a316,000.01 prize fund. Paying for it are Romesh Ranganathan, Sarah Millican, James Corden, Rhod Gilbert, Elf Lyons, Takeover Radio 106.9FM and a new sponsor called Mark Silcox. Five comedians, a youth community radio station from north Nottinghamshire, and a man whose contribution to the announcement was a straight face.<\/p>\n
The fund is \u00a316,000.01, split five ways. Best show takes \u00a35,000, best newcomer \u00a34,000, the panel prize \u00a35,000, best tech \u00a31,000 and joke of the Fringe \u00a31,000.01. Beyond the Joke reports the winners are announced at 11.30pm on Friday 28 August at the Counting House. The Fringe listing for the ISH showcase has the same 23:30 slot on the 28th. There is no entry form and no fee: a volunteer panel watches shows and decides. That’s the same principle the Malcolm Hardee judges work on, saying there’s no application process and they’ll be scouring the festival anyway.<\/p>\n
Nathan Cassidy set the ISH awards up when the main Edinburgh Comedy Awards briefly looked like being axed for want of a sponsor. He told Chortle:<\/p>\n
Four years ago ISH was simply an idea. Today it feels like a movement. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported this year’s awards. Their generosity has enabled us to create our biggest-ever prize fund, with every penny going directly to rewarding artists.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
ISH originally stood for Insert Sponsor Here. Cassidy now also uses it for Industry Standard for Health. That’s a broader push for a fairer creative sector where success comes down to talent rather than connections. He and producer Sarah Bowles are handing out stickers around the festival to anyone who backs it. A sticker won’t cover a Newington box room at August rates, whereas \u00a316,000.01 spread across five categories will at least dent somebody’s accommodation bill. The Fringe Society’s awards page carries the ISH line that 100% of whatever sponsorship is received will always be given to the artists in prizes.<\/p>\n
The newcomer prize went from \u00a3250 to \u00a34,000 in a year<\/h2>\n
Look at what the same awards were paying twelve months ago. Chortle’s write-up of the 2025 shortlists – 25 shows across the categories – lists Cassidy and Bowles funding the main prize themselves. Patrick Monahan put up \u00a3250 plus support slots for best newcomer, Rhod Gilbert \u00a3500 for the panel prize and Elf Lyons \u00a3500 for tech. This year the newcomer cheque is \u00a34,000, after Sarah Millican took that category on in June<\/a>. The panel prize has gone from \u00a3500 to \u00a35,000.<\/p>\n
Honestly, I’d have taken Monahan’s \u00a3250-and-two-support-slots over a lot of straight cash prizes. Support slots are work, and work is the thing new acts can’t buy. But \u00a34,000 clears a Fringe accommodation bill, which \u00a3250 does not. The acts I’ve spoken to at this festival are doing that sum in their heads before they do any other sum. For scale, the official Edinburgh Comedy Awards pay \u00a310,000 for the Audible Best Comedy Show<\/a>. The Taffner Family Best Newcomer and the Audible Panel Prize get \u00a35,000 each. ISH’s best show is half of that headline figure, funded by people who themselves get paid to do jokes.<\/p>\n
Thirty volunteers and 1,401 comedy shows<\/h2>\n
Here’s where I’d push. The ISH site says there will be around 30 panel members and support people this year, all unpaid. Judges are allocated roughly 10 to 15 shows at random across the first two weeks. They watch them and report back on whether the show could be the funniest on the Fringe. It also says all eligible shows are seen. Multiply 30 by 15 and you get 450 at the absolute ceiling. That assumes every judge fills their allocation and nobody gets ill, gets bumped, or gives up at 1am in a Cowgate cellar.<\/p>\n
There are 1,401 comedy shows in this year’s programme<\/a>, out of 3,649 in total. So the word doing the heavy lifting is “eligible”, and the ISH site doesn’t publish whether that means solo shows, everything in the brochure’s comedy section, or something narrower again. Compare the Edinburgh Comedy Awards. Their entry on the Fringe Society page says all shows listed in the comedy and cabaret section of the brochure are automatically checked for eligibility. That’s a rule an act can read and plan around. Say you’re doing a 2.15pm split bill in a room above a pub on Nicolson Street. You have no way of knowing whether an ISH judge is coming, and no way of asking for one.<\/p>\n
The penny on the end<\/h2>\n
The joke prize is \u00a31,000.01, and the odd penny is an ISH habit rather than a dig at anyone. Back in April, ThreeWeeks reported the same category at \u00a3500.01. It doubled when Mark Silcox came in as the new sponsor. Silcox marked the occasion by deadpanning to Chortle: “I’m proud to associate myself with the joke of the Fringe prize, as a recognised expert in crafting jokes.”<\/p>\n
Which lands it a penny above the \u00a31,000 Cheez-It Cheeziest Joke of the Fringe<\/a>, the Fringe Society’s official version. That one is decided by a shortlist of five and then a public vote. It’s also double the \u00a3500 that the rival (Some guy called) DAVE Joke of the Fringe pays, and double NextUp’s \u00a3500 and inflatable trophy<\/a>. Four best-joke competitions on one festival, three of them invented since UKTV dropped the original. Nobody in a green room this month has been able to tell me, unprompted, which one they’ve been entered into.<\/p>\n
The ceremony is a late-night one on the last Friday of the run. A decent chunk of the shortlist will already be packing up or doing a get-out. Somebody’s tech op will be in that room at 11.30pm with a grand coming their way. That’s after three weeks pressing go on other people’s cues for nothing, and I’d quite like to know what they spend it on.<\/p>\n
