A general admission ticket to Gary Owen’s late show this Friday at Oxnard Levity Live is $55, and TicketWeb adds $12.55 of fees on top. That takes you to $67.55 before you’ve bought anything at the bar. You will buy something at the bar, because the club runs a “Mandatory two-item minimum purchase per person in the showroom”. That Friday 9.15pm slot is part of the last weekend the room will ever sell. Gary Owen plays five shows across 14 to 16 August, and then Ventura County’s biggest comedy club becomes a vacant unit in a shopping centre.<\/p>\n
The 420-seat venue opened in the summer of 2016 at The Collection at RiverPark, in the unit that had been Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill. A Toby Keith bar turning into a comedy club is about as 2016 as American retail gets. Tom Segura did a sold-out four-show stand there working new material, and George Lopez ran a six-week Monday residency. The Ojai Valley News lists Kevin Hart and Gabriel Iglesias among the club’s other big draws. Its general manager reckons the mix of the county is why touring acts did numbers there at all.<\/p>\n
Levity Live Oxnard and the adjoining Copper Blues Rock Pub & Kitchen close permanently on 17 August 2026. The final show is Gary Owen’s on 16 August. The operator filed its Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with California on 17 June, naming 69 laid-off workers. That is the paperwork threshold you hit when more than 50 people lose their jobs at once. Staff got three months’ notice, which in this business counts as generous and shouldn’t. The general manager’s phrase for it was “a three-month head start as opposed to closing us down day of”.<\/p>\n
The stated reason is the lease. It expired on 31 July and the operator extended it into August to see the diary out. In a statement quoted by We Own The Laughs, the company said it was proud of the memories and grateful to “the audiences, performers, staff, and partners who made these venues special.” It added: “This was not an easy decision, but it is the conclusion of our current lease agreement.” The landlord’s side is Center Cal Properties. Its director of property management, Jennifer Duarte, told the VC Reporter that the company is “in the early stages of thinking through what’s next for the space”. The unit, she added, “has so much potential”. “So much potential” is landlord for “not a comedy club”.<\/p>\n
Here’s the thing I can’t square. As of Monday 11 August, the club’s own site was still listing Jamie Lissow for 6pm on 23 August, six days after the announced closure. Also up: Martin Amini across five shows from 1 to 3 October, and Jay Jurden on 12 November. The Live Nation venue page, meanwhile, showed nothing after the Gary Owen weekend. Jurden’s date is still sitting there with a 7.30pm start time on it.<\/p>\n
That may be nothing more than a web calendar nobody has had time to prune while 69 people update their CVs. I’d bet on that over anything sinister. But if you hold a ticket for the Lissow show, you want an email rather than a guess. Same if you’re the act with a five-show October weekend pencilled into your diary. Refund mechanics are where these things get ugly, as anyone who followed the Sandringham festival cancellation and its refund mess<\/a> will remember. The club’s ticketing page also warns that tickets bought through third-party sites will not be accepted. That matters here, because resale listings for that 23 August Lissow date were showing prices starting around $101, for a show at a venue scheduled to be shut.<\/p>\n Troy Garcia is general manager of both Levity Live and Copper Blues. He gave the Ojai Valley News the most honest read on why a 420-seat room in a shopping centre stops working.<\/p>\n “In Ventura County, we’re kinda divided here. There’s all different races here. So every comic that comes here is a draw to someone. It’s just, right now, people are hard-pressed to spend money.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n He also said this, which I’ve thought about more than any of the closure statements: “Working for a comedy club, you laugh every day. It’s an amazing job. And at Copper Blues, you listen to music, different bands, DJs, you watch people dance, (have) romantic nice dinners, anniversaries and weddings. It’s been amazing. I’ve had so many memories here. There is not a bad comic I have worked for.” Twenty years of green rooms and I’ve never met a booker who’d say that with a straight face. Garcia’s about to be out of the job, so I’ll allow it.<\/p>\n The fee split by tier is the part I keep re-reading. GA is $55 with $12.55 on top, nearly 23 per cent of face. VIP is $65 with only $6.83 in fees, and a VIP Premium Booth admitting four is listed at $115 plus $17.03, which works out at $33 a head and makes the booth the cheapest seat in the building. A club chasing a premium spend while the walk-up gets hit hardest on fees is not unusual. It’s the same arithmetic that shows up in the Comedy Fee Tracker’s numbers on what openers actually get paid<\/a>: $500 a night at the top of the club circuit, out of a 420-seat room on a Saturday. It’s the same squeeze that took Underbelly Boulevard out of its Soho lease<\/a>, and Ventura County’s touring feature spots now have one fewer room to earn it in.<\/p>\n The replacement plan, such as it is, sits eight miles up the coast. A nonprofit called The Welcome Room, founded by former Downtown Ventura Partners treasurer Alex Schneider, wants to turn a 300-seat venue at 419 E. Main St. in downtown Ventura into a comedy club. It would run on a volunteer-based model, with the proceeds from each show going to a different charity. It’s aiming to open sometime in 2027. That’s a 120-seat drop on the room being lost, and a full year of nothing in between. For the local circuit that means a year of driving to Los Angeles for stage time.<\/p>\n I’m sceptical of volunteer-staffed venues. The goodwill is real enough, but free sound engineers and door staff tend to stop being available around month seven, and a charity-proceeds model gives an act very little to negotiate with. Still, a room is a room, and the alternative in Ventura is currently a spreadsheet. The British version of this argument runs the other way round, with our grassroots clubs fighting over relief on their bills while nobody is proposing new buildings at all. That’s why comedy clubs being left out of Burnham’s 20 per cent business rates cut<\/a> stung so much.<\/p>\n One last practical thing, because it’s the kind of detail that vanishes when a venue does. Parking at the Oxnard club is free, behind the building and throughout The Collection, and the showroom is 21-plus with valid photo ID. On Sunday night that car park empties for the last time, and somebody has to work out what to do with the two-item minimum signage.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n“There is not a bad comic I have worked for”<\/h2>\n
