Book into the Edinburgh Fringe’s official artist village this year and the last date you can pick is 30 August. The 2026 Fringe runs until 31 August. If you registered a full run, that leaves you with a show to do and nowhere to sleep the night before it. The scheme doing that to you is the Fringe’s own affordable-accommodation partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Scotsman’s arts diary got to this first, under the headline “Late Fringe dates leave artists with accommodation headache at official digs”. I couldn’t get past their paywall, so nothing below is taken from their reporting. It’s all off Queen Margaret University’s own booking pages and the Fringe Society’s own announcements. That’s enough, because the dates are sitting there in plain text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The QMU Festival Village takes bookings from 2 August to 30 August 2026. On the single ensuite rooms, the longest option on the page is listed as “2 Aug \u2013 30 Aug (Weeks 1\u20134)”. The group premium apartments are offered “2\/8\/26 to 30\/8\/26” with a minimum stay of one week. The 2026 Fringe itself opens on 7 August and closes on 31 August. So the official Fringe accommodation lets you arrive five days before your first show and turfs you out one day before your last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
QMU’s reason for the Fringe accommodation cut-off is not sinister. It’s a working university in Musselburgh with students coming back for the new academic year. The flats have to be cleaned and turned around by somebody who is not a comedian. But the Fringe moved later this year, and the digs didn’t move with it. That’s the sort of calendar mismatch you only notice while dragging a suitcase of unsold flyers across Waverley at half eleven at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anyone listed through to 31 August is in the same position. Alex Love’s How To Win A Pub Quiz 2026<\/em> is a Gilded Balloon show running 7 to 31 August at 13:00. That’s per the Fringe listing and his interview with The QR on 2 August. That’s a four-star show with four sold-out Fringe runs behind it. It still ends two days after the affordable bed does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the bit that isn’t in anyone else’s coverage, and it took about four minutes of comparing two press releases. In 2025 the Fringe Society announced the QMU partnership with accommodation running 31 July to 28 August 2025. The 2025 Fringe ran 1 to 25 August. The village opened a day early and stayed open three days after the final performance. A full-run act could sleep in on the Tuesday and go home when the trains weren’t rammed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prices have moved too, and not in the direction you’d assume. The Fringe Society’s May 2025 announcement listed single rooms at \u00a3294 per week or \u00a31,176 for four weeks, with group bookings of six-bedroom apartments at \u00a32,034 per week. QMU’s 2026 page lists the five-bedroom apartment at \u00a31750 a week and the six-bedroom at \u00a31890. That’s a six-bed flat coming down by \u00a3144 a week year on year. For a four-hander sharing a six-bed over three weeks, that’s real money, roughly the cost of a decent print run of posters that nobody will look at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Chris Snow, head of artist services at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, said this about the offer when the 2025 version was announced:<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are really appreciative of QMU’s continued support of Fringe artists through their accommodation offer, and are pleased that they still have availability this close to the festival. Their recognition of the financial pressures on artists staying in Edinburgh, and genuine steps to help, are so welcome.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n That was 14 May 2025, and the availability line has aged interestingly. QMU’s general summer accommodation page currently states that “our accommodation is fully booked for July & August 2026”, while the Fringe Village pages still flag limited availability on some room types. Ring them rather than trusting either page, is my advice, and ring them before Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The village is not a hardship posting. QMU’s own 2025 release put capacity at “over 250 performers”, with rehearsal facilities, social spaces and catering on site; the earlier Chortle write-up of the 2024 launch listed a caf\u00e9, free outdoor yoga, rehearsal space, printing, wifi, parking and storage, at a starting price then of \u00a3269.50 per person per week. Rachel Athey, head of commercial services at QMU, framed it this way in the 2025 announcement: “The Edinburgh Fringe is such a vibrant and important part of Scotland’s cultural identity, and we want to support emerging talent by offering affordable, flexible accommodation during August.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n The catch has always been the geography. Musselburgh is a train ride out, which is fine at two in the afternoon and less fine when your show finishes at 23:15 and you’re doing a spot on somebody’s late-night compilation bill at 00:30. The Fringe Society lists QMU alongside the University of Edinburgh and Theatre Digs Booker as its affordable Fringe accommodation partners, so it isn’t the only route, but it’s the one with the yoga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Set that against the wider cost picture. The Edinburgh Inquirer argued on 23 July that a four-week run at non-premium venues can still be done for under \u00a33,000 in real terms, with PR Matthew Shelley quoted saying there is “a continued steep trajectory towards total unaffordability for those without substantial private means”. Both things are true at once, and the difference between them is usually whether you got a cheap bed. The cheap bed here checks out on 30 August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I don’t have a verified figure for what a room in central Edinburgh costs on the night of 30 August 2026, so I’m not going to guess at one. That is the night the official Fringe accommodation stops. What I can say is that it’s the last weekend, the city is full, and you are booking it in the first week of August with no bargaining position whatsoever. Some acts will just cut their final two performances, which is the cheapest fix and the most annoying one, given the last Sunday is often the only day a reviewer or a promoter can get in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of this is separate from the rest of the August maths. Edinburgh’s visitor levy came in this year with a five-night cap that spares long-run Fringe acts most of the pain<\/a>, but a two-night emergency booking at the end of a run is exactly the kind of stay the cap doesn’t help with. Only 16 of 402 applicants got the \u00a32,500 Keep It Fringe grant this year. The venues have their own patchwork of support, including Gilded Balloon’s \u00a32,000-a-show fund. Two extra nights of digs is small next to any of that, and it’s the one line in the budget with no fund attached to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 2026 programme launched on 4 June with 3,649 shows across 258 venues from 71 countries, 53,884 performances in total, and 1,401 of those shows are comedy<\/a>. Even if only a fraction of the QMU 250-plus are running to the final day, that’s a cluster of acts all hunting the same last-weekend room at the same time, alongside everyone already reshuffled by Assembly’s move to St Andrew Square after the fire<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One more thing off QMU’s accommodation details page, since we’re doing back-of-house: bed linen is provided, but towels and cleaning are not, and a towel pack is \u00a37.00.
